The Warren Civic Center Library now offers binoculars that Warren Public Library cardholders can check out for stargazing or bird watching. The Library Binoculars program, a new phase of the Library Telescope Program, is being launched this month in partnership with the Warren Astronomical Club and is sponsored by a grant from NASA@ My Library. Binoculars are a great introductory tool for viewing the night sky and bird watching. The binoculars kit is available to borrow from the Warren Civic Center Library and includes one pair of Vortex Crossfire binoculars, guides to the night sky and backyard birds of Michigan in a sturdy waterproof carrying case. It also includes a tripod adapter and a 60 inch tripod. These items are free to check out and circulate for one week to Warren residents with library cards.

There are also two types of telescopes available for check-out. There is a large telescope at all four Warren Public Library branches and two smaller FunScopes  at Civic Center designed for children that can be checked out in a STEAM kit. In addition, the Warren Public Library is continuing to provide free educational programs that include telescope viewing events and local speakers from the Warren Astronomical Society.

As a NASA@ My Library partner, the Warren Public Library received four circulating telescopes through grant funding and a generous donation from the Grosse Pointe Public Library. In partnership with the Warren Astronomical Society, the libraries will offer telescope events throughout the year, as well as the opportunity to check out the telescope and use it to view the night sky at home.

Each Warren Public Library branch has a library telescope for Warren patrons to check out with a valid library card. Each telescope will circulate for one week with no renewals or holds. Each household can check out a telescope once every thirty days. Visit any Warren Public Library Branch for more information.

The Library Telescope program is a national initiative that began in 2008 to give greater access of telescopes and to check them out at public libraries, just as books are checked out.
