Charles Novacek was born in Ozdany, Czechoslovakia in 1928. His youth from the ages of eleven to twenty was spent in the Czech resistance, first against the Nazis and then the Communists. After escaping his homeland in 1948, Novacek fled to Germany, then Venezuela. He was finally able to immigrate with his family to the United States in 1956, where he taught himself English as his seventh language. He began writing his memoir, Border Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance in 2000. Mr. Novacek passed away in 2007, and the his memoir was published posthumously by his wife Sandra Novacek. Sandra will be on hand to discuss her husband’s memoir. Border Crossings has been described by the Metro Times as “incredible and authentic”. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said it “is a well-told and dramatic true story. Novacek’s experience…demonstrates the folly of petty nationalism and the resilience of human decency and love“. You will not want to miss this talk about how one man overcame the horrors of the Nazis and Communists and survived to create a new life in America.
